South Street is a very active congregation that holds social justice at its core - we do our best to love God by loving neighbor. Below you will find a few ways to get involved at South Street. Campbell Elementary Supper Club
Each Thursday afternoon, a few students from Campbell Elementary School come to South Street for our Cougar Supper Club program. At Supper Club, the students are paired with a mentor who helps them one-on-one with their homework, works with them on crafts and science experiments, and talks with them about what’s going on at school and in their lives. The focus of this program is to give children one-on-one attention and to gather around the table to share a meal together. We make sure to work on table manners and respect for each other.
In addition to our work at the church, we also go on a few educational field trips throughout the semester. This has been an important program for both our mentors and the Campbell students who attend.
Green Chalice
We are one of the few congregations that has gone through the Green Chalice certification process to be a more sustainable congregation. Our "Green Team" is constantly working on ways that our congregation can better care for the environment. Click here to read more about our Green Chalice Program.
Garden Angels
We have a church garden, which our "angels" maintain. All of the produce goes to the Well of Life food pantry.
Crosslines
Crosslines is a local non-profit that helps people in need. We collect items for Crosslines each month and send volunteers frequently throughout the year. Find out more about Crosslines at their website.
Council of Churches of the Ozarks
South Street is a founding member of the Council of Churches of the Ozarks. Ecumenism is a part of our core beliefs as a part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). As such, we are actively involved in the ecumenical coalition of churches in the Ozarks. Find out more about Council of Churches of the Ozarks at their website.
Interfaith Alliance of the Ozarks
South Street is a founding member of the Interfaith Alliance of the Ozarks. We believe that any faith tradition that holds the universal worth and dignity of each person has something to teach about God's love for humanity. Therefore, we try to learn from each other and find areas where we can work together. This group meets in our parlor on the second Monday of each month. Center City Christian Outreach
Center City Christian Outreach, Inc. is a collaboration of eight downtown churches in an effort to meet the needs of the downtown area. Its focus is on those who live within the boundaries between Chestnut Expressway and Grand Street, and between Kansas Expressway and National Avenue, or who are members of the participating churches. In addition to South Street, those churches include Christ Episcopal Church, First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, Grace United Methodist Church, St. Agnes Cathedral, First Baptist, Westminster Presbyterian, and St. Paul United Methodist Church.
CCCO supports the The Well of Life Resource Center. Well of Life provides food, nutritional information, and some limited assistance with rent and utilities. It is located on Kimbrough between Elm St. and Walnut St. and is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Apple Pies
The annual baking and selling of apple pies has become an important tradition at South Street. Each year, a large portion of the congregation gathers to bake and sell apple pies. All proceeds go to outreach and to fund local programs. Check out our Apple Pies page for more information.
Mission Trips
Mission trips are a vital part of our congregation. Our youth groups have taken summer mission trips to help those in need. Since the tornado in Joplin, our congregation has taken groups on several different occasions to help with clean-up and rebuilding. We have also been to help clean-up after Katrina and have taken several trips to the Good Samaritan Ministries in Texas.
