Lenten Study 2016

Book Study led by our Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Mark Given - Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. (Parlor) - February 16 & 23, March 1 & 15

A four-week Lenten Study, led by our Scholar in Residence, Dr. Mark Given, will be on the topic of "The Atonement." A typical definition of religious atonement is found in the Merriam-Webster diction-ary: "The reconciliation of God and humankind through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ." But is this the only or best definition? And even if it is, what precisely does this mean? Our study will explore this question by reading and discussing a book titled Proclaiming the Scandal of the Cross: Contemporary Images of the Atonement (Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2006), edited by Mark D. Baker. The book is made up of many engaging reflections on the meaning of Christ’s death by Christians from a wide varie-ty of denominational backgrounds. The editor is an Evangelical, but a major purpose of the book is to expose the inadequacies of the view most associated with Evangelicalism, i.e. "penal substitution," and to introduce Christians to the rich diversity of understandings of how Christ’s death "saves" us as found in the New Testament and Christian theology. Come and enrich your spiritual understanding of the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord!  Sign up here.
